Independent R&B artist Billy Ray Rock has built his career by wearing every hat imaginable: songwriter, producer, performer, and entrepreneur. In this candid interview, he reflects on balancing creativity with the realities of the music business, explains why optimism is at the heart of his latest single “I’m Happy,” and shares the long-term legacy he hopes his music will leave for generations to come.

Q: Independent Artists Wear Many Hats. As A Writer, Producer, And Performer, How Do You Balance The Business And Creative Sides Of Your Career?

Managing the business and creative sides of my career can be tough. When you’re dealing with the business, you’re also dealing with rejection. You can create and create and create, but when you face the business side and the rejection that comes with it, it can sometimes stifle your creativity. You start questioning what you’re really trying to accomplish if people out there don’t even want to hear the end result. It’s a constant balancing act between staying inspired and staying motivated despite the challenges.

Q: Looking Back At Your Upbringing, Were There Experiences That Continue To Influence The Music You Create Today?

Growing up poor definitely shaped who I am as an artist. Music gave me an escape and allowed my imagination to take me to a better place. Looking back, I also think jazz music continues to influence what I do today. More than anything, though, it’s the support from people in my audience, the people in my demographic, who continue to encourage me and compliment the music I create. That support keeps me inspired.

Q: You’ve Steadily Built Your Career One Release At A Time. What Have Been Some Of The Milestones That Convinced You Your Hard Work Was Paying Off?

Receiving Artist of the Year awards from a couple of different organizations was a huge milestone for me. It showed me that people within the industry were recognizing what I was doing. We live in an era where you can have viral videos but still not get people to come to your concerts, or where people watch your content simply because they think it’s entertaining for the wrong reasons. Those awards reassured me that I was moving in the right direction. They fed the beast, if you will, and convinced me to keep pushing forward because things were heading in a positive direction.

Q: Modern R&B Often Leans Into Heartbreak And Struggle, But “I’m Happy” Embraces Optimism. Did You Feel Like You Were Taking A Creative Risk By Releasing Such A Positive Record?

Absolutely. Modern R&B does tend to focus on heartbreak and struggle, so releasing such a positive song was definitely a creative risk. But I wanted to do something different, something people weren’t used to hearing. I hoped it would stand out and give listeners something uplifting that felt fresh.

Q: The Song Celebrates Life’s Everyday Wins, Green Lights, Paid Bills, and Leaving Stress Behind. Why Do You Think Listeners Connect With Those Ordinary Moments?

I think people connect with those everyday moments because they’re things ordinary people experience all the time. When those little victories happen, whether it’s catching every green light, paying your bills, or simply having a good day, you’ve got to celebrate them. Sometimes it’s those small wins that give you a reason to smile and keep moving forward.

Q: How Has Writing And Producing Your Own Music Helped You Develop Your Identity As An Artist?

Writing and producing my own music has helped me develop my identity because there’s a much greater sense of accomplishment when I create something from nothing. Knowing that the finished product came entirely from an idea in my head makes the process incredibly rewarding.

Q: Beyond The Music Itself, What Kind Of Legacy Are You Hoping To Build Through Your Career?

Beyond the music itself, I want to build a catalog of songs that continues to bring people joy long after I’m gone. Hopefully, my music will live beyond my lifetime, beyond my kids’ lives, and continue reaching people for generations to come.

Q: As You Look Toward The Future, What Goals Remain On Your Bucket List, And Where Do You See Billy Ray Rock In The Next Five Years?

As I look toward the future, one of the biggest goals on my bucket list is gaining more national exposure. I want to bring my music to the audience that truly understands my message and appreciates the artistry behind what I create. My goal is simple: to bring joy into people’s lives, whether that’s through a live concert or through a song they stream at home. Any way I can make someone’s day a little brighter by sharing my music would be an incredible accomplishment.
