Author Eugene Crowley, Jr. has released his second book, Paris on My Mind: Thoughts of Paris, James Baldwin, and Harlem. After speaking at a conference, “A Language To Dwell In: James Baldwin, Paris, International Visions” at the American University in Paris in May of 2016, Mr. Crowley was inspired to write his book. The author begins his book in his hometown, St. Joseph, Missouri, whose founder, Joseph Robidoux, was a French fur trader. Anything French, the author connected it with Paris. Baldwin’s works and his strategies in dealing with America’s social problems remain relevant today, just as they were over half a century ago when Baldwin voiced his concerns about America’s racial and other social challenges. Baldwin relied on his religion and the wisdom of the past to address America’s social conflicts. Baldwin offered guidance on how to avoid falling victim to those with an inferiority complex. Baldwin shared insights into the truths of the past and suggested that his followers be aware of their spiritual inheritance, which could help transcend the stings of America’s social issues.

Author – Eugene Crowley, Jr.

After teaching English grammar and world literature for thirty-two years in Chicago’s public schools, Eugene Crowley retired in 2001. After returning from South America in 2002, he decided to write Upside Down World: The Loss of the Sacred Cosmos to reconcile Western secular thought with Native American Indian and ancient Eastern wisdom in an effort to bring America and Western culture to maturity through spiritual awakening. On Crowley’s first visit to Europe, he was impressed that the continent had acknowledged the contributions of both ancient and modern Blacks. His first impression of Paris and of Europe was one of elation in the continent’s recognition of his race. Removing himself from the arena of racism in America and visiting another country that celebrated the Black race gave the author a greater appreciation and a strong sense of pride in his ancestors.
