In a world where media can shape perceptions and influence culture, Felèsha Love is on a mission to ensure that the voices of Black women in radio are preserved, celebrated, and expanded into new frontiers. As the Founder and CEO of Black Women in Radio (BWIR) and the BWIR Historical Society, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Felèsha’s journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to empowerment through storytelling.
Felèsha’s career began in the dynamic and unpredictable world of college radio. At Lindenwood University, she found her voice in an unlikely genre: Punk Rock. This unexpected start ignited a passion for radio that would span nearly four decades, allowing her to master her craft across stations like The WIZ (WIZF), V 103, STAR 94, HOT 97.5, and KISS 104. As her career evolved, so did her focus. Now, her energy is channeled into producing “The MySpiritFitness Wellness Moment Shows,” engaging two-minute radio segments on WAOK and JAM98 that promote lifestyle wellness, encouraging listeners to prioritize their health.
However, Felèsha’s work extends far beyond fitness and radio waves. She founded BWIR with a deep desire to create a platform for Black women in the industry. In an era where female voices—particularly those of color—are often marginalized, BWIR offers a collaborative, supportive community that highlights the historical and contemporary contributions of Black women in radio. As Love prepares for the next phase of her journey with BWIR, she continues to challenge the status quo and redefine what it means to be a woman in the media.
Felèsha’s journey to establish BWIR was not without challenges. Balancing a demanding radio career with family obligations was difficult in an industry that often lacks accommodations for aspiring wives and mothers. The competitive nature of radio didn’t allow much room for women to prioritize both career and family. Felèsha, however, found a way to navigate these pressures by embracing her role as a leader and innovator.
Today, she spearheads a national historical collection initiative that aims to preserve 80 years of Black radio culture. In partnership with the Radio Preservation Task Force (RPTF) at the Library of Congress, the AUCC Robert R. Woodruff Library, and distinguished media veterans, the project will house two groundbreaking collections: the BWIR Collection, America’s first and largest contemporary historic archive for women of color, and the LEGENDS Collection. Both are slated to debut at the Library of Congress next year, solidifying her legacy in preserving the rich heritage of Black radio.
Looking back, Felèsha marks the 7th anniversary of BWIR as a career highlight, reflecting on the relationships and collaborations she has built with remarkable women in media. “BWIR has brought together women I never would have met otherwise. These connections are the true highlights of my radio career,” she shares. For Love, BWIR is more than an organization; it’s a growing sisterhood, a community of women sharing the common goal of amplifying each other’s voices.
But Love isn’t stopping with radio. She launched the BWIR TV channel in collaboration with BeSpire TV CEO Traci S. Campbell. The channel will be a groundbreaking space where creatives, both professionals and novices, can come together to produce content, build brands, and turn their passion into sustainable ventures. Love envisions BWIR TV as a platform that will illuminate the path for future storytellers, offering media training and workshops for anyone interested in producing their own television shows. Additionally, specialized workshops, such as an AI and media seminar scheduled for October 11, 2024, will keep participants at the cutting edge of technological advancements in media.
BWIR TV’s mission extends beyond production—it’s about fostering empowerment through collaboration. Felèsha is passionate about helping people identify gaps in their growth and providing strategies to bridge those gaps. Her experience as a college professor and business consultant positions her uniquely to guide others through the changing media landscape. Whether through training future media professionals or offering business mentorship, her goal is to inspire women to take control of their narratives, turning their voices into powerful tools for change.
