Your Uniqueness is Your Superpower
Crystal Shell believes that true power lies in embracing your strengths and weaknesses. Black women entering any field have to embrace their unique perspectives and experiences to shatter ceilings and leave a lasting impact.
“Always strive for excellence, and don’t be afraid to showcase your capabilities. Build a personal brand that reflects your values and professional goals,” she says, highlighting that your identity is your superpower.
Rising Above Barriers with Confidence
Despite progress, racism, bias, and discrimination remain part of the reality for many, if not all, Black businesswomen. Crystal is quick to remind us that these barriers should not define your path. “Discrimination is their issue, not yours—don’t waste your energy on it,” she advises.
Instead of just weathering the storm, Crystal encourages creating your own sunshine. Know your rights, find your cheerleaders, and build a community that lifts you up.
Finding the Right Support Networks
When it comes to building a strong support system, Crystal suggests being selective about the groups you choose to join. “Avoid joining groups solely based on skin color or diversity,” she advises. “Instead, thoroughly research groups by checking their reviews from multiple sources. Ensure they are community-focused, financially stable, and have strong organization and leadership. Engaging with these groups can provide both mentorship and community.”
Finding the right network can provide mentorship, career development opportunities, and a sense of community. Many successful Black women, including Crystal, credit their achievements in part to the support and guidance they’ve received from mentors.
The Power of Mentorship
Mentorship is a recurring theme in Crystal’s journey. She believes that having someone who has walked the path before you can be a game-changer. For young Black women in tech, seeking out mentors should be a proactive effort. Crystal spotlights the importance of attending industry conferences, joining tech-specific groups, and even reaching out to potential mentors directly on platforms like LinkedIn.
Empowerment Through Self-Care and Goal Setting
Staying grounded in a fast-paced, demanding industry requires intentionality. For Crystal, setting clear goals and regularly reflecting on her progress have been essential practices throughout her career.
“It’s also important to prioritize self-care and maintain a healthy work-life balance to sustain long-term success,” Shell recommends. Taking breaks, setting boundaries, and ensuring that your mental and physical health are top priorities are just as important as hitting your professional milestones.
