Immigration has existed for as long as humanity has existed. Even our prehistoric ancestors left their old homes in search of new ones, looking for a better life. But what motivates modern people to make this decision?

First, important economic factors, or simply the desire to live better than before, play its role. Second, people often move from one state to another due to political factors, feeling uncomfortable with the political climate. Third, many people change their country and even continent to get better opportunities for self-realization, both personally and professionally.

While there are those people who migrate simply because they love to change surroundings and wish to live in various corners of the globe, it is usually the practical, rather than the mental, side of the issue that drives the decision.

Immigration to the United States

In percentage terms, the number of migrants in the United States is not surprisingly large. But, in absolute terms, their numbers are vast. The United States ranks first in the world in the number of migrants, with approximately 50,000,000 people born in other countries. Germany, which holds the “silver” in this regard, lags far behind with just over 16,000,000 migrants.

The proportion of migrants in the United States has now reached a historic high of 15%. A similar situation was observed in the last decades of the 19th century when this peak was first recorded. The current migration boom began in the 1970s and continues to this day.

Active migration of Russian-speaking people started in the late 19th century. During the existence of the Russian Empire, 3 million people migrated to the United States. Migration has been uneven. Demographic specialists recorded migration waves. For example, there was a surge during the Revolution and World War I, during which another million people left their homeland, favoring the United States.

The US government had to pay attention to this situation and make immigration rules stricter. After that, the influx of migrants became less active.

What Do We Have Now?

The beginning of the latest wave of migration was recorded 40 years ago. A sharp increase in the number of foreigners arriving in the US occurred in March 2022, and this upward trend continues today.

According to statistics from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, in March 2022, 1,799 Ukrainians arrived in the US. By December 2023, this number had increased nearly sixfold – 10,991.
